Post subject: Gatecrasher Birmingham Pres. Sander Van Doorn & Danny Ho |
|
|
With 4 Clubs and 9 bars to explore, the venue is more than just a club. Saturday nights at Ga...tecrasher Birmingham are THE place for clublands most revered dance and music fans can expect the best that house, electro, trance, alternative and RnB has to offer.
Dutch legend and Gatecrasher favourite SANDER VAN DOORN makes his Birmingham debut this spring alongside rising star and new Radio 1 Dance Anthems DJ DANNY HOWARD for a bank holiday spectacular on Saturday 7th April.
The stage is set. The lights are down. The anticipation for what’s to come is rising through the club like electric energy. Excitement is building until the massive LED screens reveals the name that they’ve all been waiting for, a name that makes the crowd erupt…here it comes… SANDER VAN DOORN!
Sander Van Doorn had a phenomenal 2012! Highlights included the wildly successful second edition of his “Dusk Till Doorn” compilation and ambitious sell-out global tour, a residency at The Marquee in Las Vegas and his first Vocal Production “Love is Darkness” Featuring Carol Lee. He was also awarded the prestigious Silver Harp Award at the Buma Harp Gala 2011 in Utrecht, Netherlands. The harp is one of the highest awards you can receive in Holland and has only ever been previously awarded to Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren.
A technical and musical genius, Sander van Doorn is without a doubt one of the world’s most essential, influential and popular DJ/Producers in dance. A brand synonymous with excellence – both production wise, and in front of the thousands he plays to nightly. He is truly one of the strongholds in dance music, a generation defining artist that reshapes the perception of what dance music can be. When Carl Cox stops the music to point you out, telling the nearly 50,000 people “This is one of the best producers in music today, remember his name…Sander van Doorn!” then you can bet the whole world will take notice. And Carl wasn’t the only Sander fan. Armin van Buuren named Sander one to watch early on, and Tiesto championed his productions regularly.
Sander seized the opportunities at hand and dedicated himself to a relentless touring and production schedule for the next few years. It was during this time that Sander penned some of his classics. From originals like Grasshopper, Punk’d and Riff, to massive remixes of The Killers (Spaceman), Sia (The Girl You Lost To Cocaine), Robbie Williams (Close My Eyes) and Depeche Mode (Peace) it seemed the lad from Eindhoven was on a collision course for superstardom.
He is now required headliner at the most prestigious institutions dance music has ever known. Mysterland, Dance Valley, Global Gathering, Sankeys, Pacha, Cream, Sensation, Space, SW4, Trance Energy, Creamfields and of course Gatecrasher have all hailed his arrival .Each year the number of countries visited grows, as does his frequent flier status. With a tour diary that see’s the superstar play to more than a million fans each year, there’s no doubt that that Sander van Doorn is dance music’s favourite son.
Sander continues to meet the demands of being one of the world’s most sought after artistsby continuing to evolve musically, professionally and artistically. In 2010 a deal was reached with global satellite leader SiriusXM to syndicate his radio show called ‘Identity.’ The show airs twice weekly to over 10 million worldwide on channel 38, Electric Area.
Joining Sander is new radio 1 signing DANNY HOWARD. Howard’s rise to fame has been nothing short of stratospheric. This month the superstar has been confirmed as the latest addition to the star-studded line-up at Radio 1. Danny , will front his very own Radio 1 show “Dance Anthems” every Saturday from 4pm to 7pm.
The popularity of the former Syndicate nightclub DJ has rocketed since he won the station’s Superstar DJ 2011 competition in the Summer and opened Radio 1’s Ibiza Weekend at the Ushuaia Hotel in Ibiza..
In 5 short years Danny has established himself as a real genuine next level DJ in a very short space of time. Throughout his DJ career Danny has already had great success playing at various venues across the UK and internationally gaining residencies at Ministry Of Sound as well as at UK’s biggest Superclub ‘The Syndicate’ in Blackpool.
In his own words Danny describes his style as ‘Sexy house’ but because of his love for electronic music, he has never pigeonholed himself into a single style or genre… ‘If it sounds good, I’ll play it’!
Danny’s DJ sets are very much based on being versatile, using influences from every genre from every era and giving the crowd in front of him an unforgettable performance! He’s played at some of the top nightclubs as well as at various venues across the UK often supporting some of the world’s top DJs & Acts, most recently two appearances at one of the world’s most famous clubs – Space Ibiza. He has also featured on some of the UK’s biggest club brand dance tours such as Hed Kandi, Cream and Gatecrasher.
At just 23 years of age, Danny became one of the youngest resident DJs at The Syndicate Superclub in Blackpool (The UK’s Biggest Club) and also had a very successful residency for the world renowned Ministry of Sound & Hed Kandi based in Egypt earlier in 2011.
Danny Howard has hit the ground running after his phenomenal achievement at Radio 1, he’s in the studio with some of the industry’s most talented producers, gigs lined up from coast to coast, demand for residencies coming in thick and fast and with his future yet unscripted things are rapidly on the up for Danny and his rise to stardom is motoring at an unprecedented speed.

You’ve only been DJing for about 5 years, what is the secret to your stratospheric rise to fame?
There is no real secret. It all comes down to putting 100% into everything you do and taking EVERY opportunity you can (no matter how big or small) and using it to your advantage. If you feel like you could have done more with any project, then it isn't good enough... that's the 'secret' to anything you do in life! But, the key in all that is to be nice!!
Who were your DJing heros and did anyone help you along the way?
My ultimate DJ hero is Erick Morillo! That man is like my god! His energy and pure passion for what he does is something I've always admired and ever since seeing him perform in the UK & Ibiza... he's what I've strived to become! In terms of help along the way, I've been very lucky to have such experienced DJs and colleagues with in the industry who have always helped and supported me and I'm so grateful for their advice and guidance to get me started on this amazing journey! More recently, it's such a privilege to be able to say that Paul Oakenfold & Judge Jules are becoming mentors for me in terms of management and guidance for the future and it's crazy just saying that but I couldn't ask for two better people to call on for advice... A real honour!
Tell us about becoming the Radio 1 Superstar DJ in 2011, what was the process and what made you stand out?
The process was that 6 finalists got selected to go down to the Radio 1 studios in London to complete a series of DJ related tasks in the week leading up to the R1 weekend in Ibiza. The plan was simple... do your best! We didn't actually get to see each other perform the tasks so I had no clue if I was doing well or not! It was so tense and even more nerve racking doing the live 5 minute mix to 8 million listeners on the Moyles show for the final! But I just did my thing and it was enough to start off the dream I'd always had!
And now you’ve got your own weekly Dance Anthems show, it’s pretty mind-blowing stuff?
Tell me about it!! It really is still sinking in! A year ago I was a die hard Radio 1 listener and now I have my own show... It's weird just saying that!
What can we expect from your show and when do you start?
Well first of all, I can tell you it's not going to be anything like the Dance Anthems of old! It has a new spin... a new style, something I think is currently missing off the R1 schedule. It's about all the big tunes of NOW! Dance music has blown up all over the world over the last few years and there's a lot of big tracks getting missed... which is where I come in! There's no boundaries... it's all about what is BIG on the dance scene and across the world...NOW!
Are you the next Dave Pearce or Judge Jules? Or do you have any other Radio idols?
I'm definitely not the next DP or JJ! I'm Danny Howard and this is something completely new for me and for Radio 1. I'm so excited to put my own stamp on things but at the same time taking bits from legends like Dave Pearce, Judge Jules and of course Pete Tong. They've got so much experience behind them that you have to respect what they've done for radio and the UK dance scene to then say, right, what can I learn from them but then make it into my own!
And you’re working on new tracks? David Guetta’s label has signed you?
Yes, I've been getting into the studio a lot since last year and it's one of my main priorities this year (aside from the Radio 1 show). David Guetta's label hasn't signed me and it's a complete myth as to how that's come about?! My first release is out on dutch label Spinnin Records on 2nd April and I'm so excited as they release tracks from the likes of Afrojack, Sander Van Doorn, Laidback Luke, Nicky Romero etc... so it's amazing to a part of that circle.
When is your first track out and what is it called?
My first track is out on Monday 2nd April and it's called 'Twenty-Nine' in memory of my father who passed away two years ago. I finished the track on his birthday last year so thought it was quite fitting to relate the two. He's definitely looking after me from up there...
You were a resident at the Syndicate now you are DJing across the world, what would be your dream gig?
At the time, The Syndicate was my dream gig. I spent years going there as a raver and saw so many big DJs play that when I became resident it was a very proud moment for me! Now it's just going crazy and I'm so grateful for that! My dream gig would definitely be Pacha in Ibiza! I love the club and love what it's about! I real intimate vibe but so epic in its own right!
Any plans for Miami and Ibiza this year?
Nothing for Miami this year as I sort of missed the boat on that one but I'm looking forward to Ibiza so much. I'm very happy to announce that I'm playing for Judgement Sunday at Eden every two weeks throughout the season... one of the island's busiest nights so it's going to be huge!
This is your first Gatecrasher gig, what can we expect from you set?
Aside from a siiiick party... I like to play across the spectrum of house but in a big way! Definitely hands in the air breakdowns to smack in the face drops! Really can't wait to get behind the decks at Gatecrasher... a gig I've been looking forward to for ages!
Have you DJ’d with Sander before?
I've never DJ'd with Sander before and I'm really excited about doing so. I know he's been playing my new track 'Twenty Nine' in his sets so again, mind blowing stuff to have someone like him supporting my work!
You seem to have achieved the ultimate goals of any DJ, what is next?
The next for me is to keep going! Once you achieve something, you set yourself new goals and work as hard as you can to achieve them. This year my main focus is growing the profile of the Radio 1 show and my production.

Your new track Chasin’ is out now – fans are saying it is the 2012 answer to your hit Koko would you concur?
I didn’t write it with that in mind, but I have heard it quite a bit having just come from Miami, so why not?
'Eleve11' your artist album has received phenomenal critical acclaim tell us about it?
Well for me, I really approached it with an ‘album’ mentality. I didn’t want to release an album that was simply a bunch of club tracks. As a producer and writer you get inspired by all sorts of things and being able to communicate that through music is what it’s all about. I was really pleased that fans and music lovers of all genres appreciated the music on Eleve11.
From Dusk Till Dorn 2011 compilation was also a great success?
Yeah it’s a brand we’ve been building for some time now and I think that album really pulled together all the great sounds and energy from one of the Dusk Till Doorn nights.
Last year you toured From Dusk Till Dorn with a completely interactive show, what can we expect from your DJ set this time around?
Well I have ramped up production to give a very state of the art visual show to accompany my set. I am using Unlimited [from NL] for this and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
Is it important as a superstar DJ to create unique and visually inspiring sets?
You have to define yourself in a way that works for you. I wanted to give the performance something extra, so this works for me, but there is no reason that a dark club with music you love can’t work just as well. It’s all about expectation and perception and what you as an artist want to covey. There’s no one way to do it!
What are your plans for Miami this year?
Well, I’m just back from that relaxing in Vegas right now for a few days, so I can say it was bigger and better than I even expected. I had a private showcase for my new single with a singer called Mayaeni [‘Inside’] that was amazing. Was at Tom Lord Alge’s [mega producer Pink, Blink182, Avril +100”s more] home on the water and was just spectacular. Then we had a few shows here and there but the cherry on top was playing Ultra on Sunday. Went live to a few million people so I hear and I really can never absorb how massive it is until I watch it back. Definitely another highlight show.
Tell us about your residency at The Marquee in Las Vegas, has Vegas has become the new capital of dance?
So they say! I think there is an overwhelming amount of money in Vegas so and they are putting a lot of time and effort on the dance scene. It can definitely become a US capital for dance music, that’s for sure.
Your radio show Identity has achieved phenomenal success and broadcasts to over 10 million world-wide...is this an important means of communicating regularly with your fans?
Yes because I can keep them updated with everything I’m up to and it’s just a more personal way to communicate with everyone across a global scale.
And you have your own YouTube channel? Yes youtube.com/sandervandoorn.tv
You constantly have new projects on the go, how do you find the time to get everything done?
Now that I can produce on my laptop, I feel like I get much more productions done.
You played Gatecrasher a lot back in the day - do you have any special memories?
Always one of the best events, everyone is ready to go from the moment I come on. I think we’ll be making some new amazing memories coming up!!
What can we expect from your Gatecrasher Birmingham set?
I have a few surprises in store that’s for sure. Got a lot of new music in Miami, so will be dropping some of those and maybe testing out a few SvD ones so get ready!
What's next for 2012?
Working on a new album and a few more interesting collaborations- but that’s all I can say at the moment!
