Despite being around for less than a year, the guys behind Digital Society seem determined to make it an essential part of the clubbing calendar, and with their combination of intelligent line-ups and a growing fan-base, it seems that the night is destined only to go from strength to strength.


Make no mistake, Digital Society (already known affectionately as "DS" to its' regulars) is not like your normal club night. There are no VIP rooms roped off by stern-faced bouncers, no pretty-boy poseurs sipping champagne in the corner sticking their noses up at people, no gangs of lager-drinking Burberry-boys yelling "Oooooh! Oooooh!" during every tune, and most of all, no attitude. In short, it's the one thing clubland has been crying out for since the era of the superclub.


Who knows, perhaps once again the north of England will be home to the second revivial? Whilst much of clubland currently seems stagnated with high DJ fees, egos, and profit, once again with the likes of DS we can see the beginnings of something which, if it continues at the rate it has been, may have the potential to redefine clubland all over again.


It's easy to talk about the line-ups at DS - it's obvious they've been well thought out, well structured, and each DJ has been given a slot which suits their style rather than throwing them round dependant on their popularity without a thought on how their styles might clash - something most of the bigger club nights have been guilty of for a while now when they should know better. It's easy to talk about the venue - the main room an intimate, low-ceilinged room on split-levels with a smoking area outside, so perfectly proportioned for the night itself it's as if the MyHouse venue was built with DS in mind. It's easy to talk about how you can get a round in at the bar without coming away bankrupt, again something quite criminally rare these days! No, the one thing that defines DS itself is its' atmosphere, where the sum of all the parts come together to combine to create something even more special.



The name itself, Digital Society, is so apt for the night it must either a very lucky coincidence or the culmination of a masterplan, because as a clubber, I can honestly say that the atmosphere is unlike any I've experienced in a nightclub since Gatecrasher circa 1998/99 - essentially, it's the overall feeling that the clubbers themselves are actually a part of something. Rather than simply being paying punters footing the bill for the promoters' profit-margins about whom no-one gives a second thought about once they've passed the front door, the regulars at DS are very much becoming a society of their own, and from the second you walk into the place, it's this sense of togetherness that hits you first.



On my arrival on the Friday night I was clutching my 12" copy of GTR - Mistral in the hope of having it signed, and imagine my pleasant surprise when, after about 30 seconds stood at the bar, Gareth Emery himself walked past, and was happy to stop for a chat and to sign it for me! Such is the atmosphere at DS - I can't think of many nights where the headlining DJ of the night would happily wander round the crowd as just another clubber. And a lovely guy he is too!



November's DS was, of course, the FiveAM night, second of DS's three label-specials, and after another exquisite warm up from Will Holland, Finnish superstar Orkeida took to the decks and treated the crowd to a spectacular eclectic set. Progressive, techy, melodic - it was all of this and more, every tune as diverse as the last yet still flowing beautifully together and building up the (once again, packed) crowd into a frenzy. Once the remix of Underworld - Cowgirl (I think it was the Futureshock mix) hit the speakers everyone in the main room was dancing.



Following on from him it was Gareth Emery, recently voted the world's number 31 in the DJ Mag poll. Whilst being a subscriber to his podcast I'd never actually seen him play live before, but he did anything but disappoint. Treating us to some of his own work like the summer anthem "More Than Anything", as well as Stoneface & Terminal - Inner Voice, and a special edit of Lange's vocal beauty "Out Of The Sky", it was possibly the best set I've seen at DS yet, and more than worthy of his new ranking. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, in dropped the unmistakable sounds of GTR - Mistral which tore the roof off the place. Considering it was 4 years since I'd last heard it in a club, I certainly hope it's not as long till next time!




Cliff Coenraad followed on, making his debut in the UK, and as his productions have been demonstrating up to now is certainly going to be one to watch out for in 2008. Taking the night onto a more techy direction, filled with filthy beats and rumbling basslines , gradually he built us up again into harder, trancey edge. I'm sure I heard his own tune "The Hazzolator" in there somewhere too. All in all another nice, eclectic mix which worked the dancefloor and set it up perfectly for the final guest of the evening.



Paul Moelands aka Re:Locate completed the guest line up and moved the night further up another gear. With a set that could only be described as banging, once again DS demonstrated the benefits of not only having DJs in an order to suit their style, but equally the benefits of all the DJs being there throughout the night itself. All four guests were able to take note of the crowd and the atmosphere for a while before they came on and were hence able to play to them accordingly, something I suspect wouldn't be the case if they'd arrived through the door 5 minutes before coming on. Mistral's only contender for tune of the night came when Re:Locate dropped John O'Callaghan & Audrey Gallagher - Big Sky, undoubtably a contender for anthem of the year.



And then to close, resident and promoter Kane Nelson took to the decks for the final set, celebrating his birthday in the process. Kicking off with Bart Claesson's epic "First Light", DS's resident crowd pleaser seemed intent on giving himself and the crowd a no respite until the very end! Banging from the word go, including other great dancefloor epics such as the new mix of Adam White - Ballerina and the truly dirty bass of Bryan Kearney - Punchline, it was a closing set worthy of the night. Final tune, appropriately, was Lange vs Emery - This Is New York, and tore the roof off for the final time.



Overall, another blinding success at DS, and another one for the scrapbook. With next month's Discover label party to come things can only be destined to onwards and upwards for this night, and who knows what 2008 may bring? Well, with a February 1st birthday planned that's promised to be "epic" as well as more high profile guests and debuts, it's very much already the place to be. For one I'm already glad to have "joined the society", and I'm confident that anyone else, after only one visit, will do the same....

Night Series. Label Night no3 features the highly regarded Discover Records and

is headlined by label head John Askew. Discover can boast of countless top draw

releases and is very much the Trance label of the moment. John is joined by

fellow Discover artists Tom Colontonio who flys in from the US for an exclusive

UK Debut, and rising star, the man they call Activa. DS residents Enhanced boss

Will Holland, Paul Pearson and Rav Takhar all feature on a event roster that

promises close 2007 with stunning effect. In the wonderful surroundings of

Leeds most intimate venue MyHouse, with the fantastic DS production & decor,

the FunktionOne soundsystem, and Blank kicking off there room2 residency

upstairs, on the 14th of December Digital Society is set to explode all over

again...

Label head John Askew hosts the third part of the DS Label Night Series with

Discover Records. John has spearheaded the continued success of both Discover

and the Discover Dark labels with his own distinctive sound, and an eye for the

Trance scenes most impressive rising stars. With one of the best regarded

reputations in clubland and relentless gigs spanning right across the world -

including recent shows with Paul Van Dyk - Mr Askew arrives at DS, right at the

Society UK debut exclusive. Tom is certainly the biggest talent coming out of

Americas Trance scene right now, and after showing the world what he is all

about with strong production work such as 'Illuminate'/' Maximizer" and his

awesome remix of 'Slyone vs Jurrane -Timebomb', it is time for Tom to show what

he is all about behind the decks for the first time on European soil. In the

past 12months Tom has headlined along side the Trance scenes biggest superstars

and continues to work with the most credible artists and labels around. Expect

Activa at the very forefront of todays Trance scene. Rob Stevenson 'Activa' is

fast becoming a dancefloor favourite, and will once again deliver pure driving

Trance at its best.

first time, and this showcase promises to be something quite special. Rav has

become a DS favourite in the past few months, and will show his versatility
